Paul Verhoeven's
"Starship Troopers" tries to have it both ways: it glorifies violent
inter-species warfare while shoving the concept of MILLIONS of casualties in the
viewers' faces. Combining excellent special effects with the director's cynical
views on propaganda and military recruitment, "Troopers" wants you to
feel the visceral thrills of war as well as its horrors. The tribute video
features skillful editing and transitions by Steven Richards, an original
metal-core soundtrack, and guitar fireworks courtesy of Wreck Creation's Joe
Riese.
J. Lee Thompson's "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes" was a
prequel with a difference...it explored the social conditions that led to mankind's fall
from dominance and the rise of Ape culture. Slavery and cruelty were integral parts of the
fascist society depicted in "Conquest"; this has the audience rooting hard for
the apes' ultimate victory. Our tribute video focuses on the darker elements of Thompson's
film, with an original soundtrack that evokes the violence of revolution.
George Romero's "Dawn of the
Dead" was a sequel that came ten years after the original "Night of the Living
Dead", and it shattered all horror conventions that came before. Tom Savini (who
appears in the film as a biker) created the makeup effects that drive this film beyond
anything previously seen. The plot involves four survivors of the plague who take over a
shopping mall filled with cannibal zombies. These shambling creatures wander around the
mall, much as they did in life. Our protagonists secure the sprawling shopping center,
only to face a new enemy....The soundtrack here is inspired by Dario Argento's original
DoD theme.
The Prisoner Project is, alas, a
dead deal. It was to be a radio drama utilizing the talents of our friends in the
Prisoner newsgroup at alt.tv.prisoner.
Two things combined to kill the project: first, Steven Richards, my
partner in this & all the other SJR projects, vanished from the web (and from the face of the earth) after we finished "Heroes".
I am happy to report that the New Zealand Phantom has, in fact, returned &
is alive & very well. (website) Second, the
Prisoner newsgroup has
degenerated into pro- and anti- Six of One groups, with little real community
anymore. You can still click here for a Flash promo
reel.
